Attached means the roof ties into the house. Freestanding means the posts carry it alone. Both are pergolas. They are not the same installation.
Attached to the house
An attached pergola fastens to the wall you already have — block, frame, or a lanai beam — and lands the outer edge on posts. The ledger has to match that wall. A pretty sketch that ignores the beam is how projects get redesigned on site.
Attachment is also why the City of Port St. Lucie building department is often part of the conversation. The house is in the load path. Permits, when they apply, are handled for that address rather than from a county-wide assumption.
Freestanding in the yard
A freestanding pergola stands on its own footings. It can sit beside a pool, on a pad away from the lanai, or over a dining spot that does not touch the house. It does not use the wall for support, which matters when the wall is the wrong place for a ledger.
